Curious as to how many social networking/media sites do you belong too and Why. I know my journey began as part of educational and business research, finding that over a number of years I ended up being a member of over 60 sites (none of them dating ones by the way). Totally unmanageable and as time has gone on I have begun to cull many, also lost passwords have forced me to ignore some.

I am now using only a few sites to keep myself up to date and those which seem to have a practical purpose, yes facebook, twitter, myspace but this less and less, linkden and am now testing branch out. Of course blogs and my own website are not going anywhere.

It has been a long journey and as more cloud computing comes into play that is certainly in the mix.

Love to hear about others journeys and what and why you are using particular sites.

Branch out is a relatively new social networking site that appears to be in competition with Linkedin. I am still not sure exactly how it works although I am puddling around with it. What I am finding at this stage is that it is very similar to Linkedin so do I really need Branch out in my kit of tools. I would love to hear from others about their experiences and their comparison of the two.

Mother Earth is certainly showing her might. The earthquake (8.9) and 4 tsunamis that have hit Japan between 8-10 metres high, another tragedy and more to come with comments that even the top of Australia will be hit by a Tsunami in approx 6 hours and other countries to be hit as well. Maybe we need to start looking after our planet to calm mother earths wrath.

I hope you will read this article. It gives a great insight into the millions being made out of virtual worlds and the games offered. Scary in many ways, people paying to grow virtual food, create cake shops, run zoo's and more. Whatever happened to Board games?
Not that I am against people playing games on facebook or other such sites, it can be fun but to be shelling out millions, to play a virtual game is, in my opinion, just not right.

The tactics used by the game creators and marketers is very clever and quite simple. Appeal to the competitive nature of many and ensure the only way they can get the premium items on the games is through using 'real money'. If you want the best farm, cafe or Zoo, you will have dip into your bank account to do so.

For those on Facebook games, be careful as if you put a foot wrong on your facebook profile they can cancel your account at the click of a button, and you will have access to the virtual games you have spent many dollars and hours playing.

I would love to hear more opinions as there is a great deal to discuss here about marketing, psychology and economics. I am sure that the real Zoo's of the world would benefit from donations to take care of real animals and they now may miss out as folks spend their money on virtual animals - Certainly a changing world:)

Between today & tomorrow, the New FB Privacy setting called "Instant Personalization" goes into effect. The new setting shares your data with non-FB sites & it is automatically set to "Enabled". Go to Account > Privacy Settings > Apps & Websites > Instant Personalization > edit settings & uncheck the "Enable" box. By the way If your friends don't do this, they will be sharing information about you as well.

Mobilizethis 2010 is 5 years strong and one hopes that this critical conference held at Darwin University and hosted by Bill Wade will continue in the years to come.

Remember this conference is for those physically present and those distantly present. It is of no cost to participants apart of course for the cost of time.

Time well spent if you are in the educational arena, seeking out the new technologies that enhance the learning experience not only for the clients in education but for those teachers/lectureres/facilitators.

The technologicial revolution in education is NOT new, however it is organic and evolving at a rapid pace.

An excellent comment made today 'Teaching is not dead, Teaching is a most noble profession, Learning is alive and well. In short some teaching or pedagogical approaches must die and modified, changed and new ways embracing the new age we are in must be explored, trialed and implemented, to ensure the currency of learning.

Technology provides all educators and learners with new tools that when used well, not only enhance learning but ensure the currency of learning.

I still remember the days when overheads were new, when powerpoint was the rage - 'death by powerpoint', when old out of date videos were used, gee even when text books were the main focus of teaching.

There were roadblocks at each stage, people not wishing to embrace the new methods of teaching and learning practice. Even when educators were supplied with lap tops, so that they could embrace new technologies the resistance was great, same with videos, dvds and many moons ago the publication of books were for the elite only - in China books were burnt.

We have progressed folks, no doubt about it but some of the constraints still seem near impossible to break free of. Mostly from administrators, management in institutions who are stuck back in time and seem to have a mental block as to how technology can be better than the sage on the stage telling learners what to know, what to do.

Time has come for some to simply get their heads out of the sand, embrace the innovators within organisations and enable them to learn more, remain current, provide them with the time to research to provide best practice and allow them to champion the new pedagogy and work on those resistance to change.

I was most encouraged to hear more about POV Point of View Technologies and the place they now hold in learning and the fact that this will increase over time.

RMIT's presentation too encouraging with their program CreateED, drawing on leaders from within areas in the creative arts arena to encourage all staff to engage, trail, try new things and support them in doing so. Still a struggle and a hard road but their model and experience to date is heartening.

NING - Bait and Switch

What a shame about Ning. I had so many different networks on Ning that I created and worked within, providing myself and others with a wonderful network and learning environment. Shame about the old bait and switch tactic used. Sucked me in and then all of a sudden I had to pay to keep going, after all the time and effort put in. Something we all need to be cautious of as if one uses such a tactic, I am sure others will follow.

Sorry Ning, you were a good friend but I am not about to pay for something that I can create and use elsewhere for free and actually be in control of.

Long Live Live Music!

This year the Live Music Scene in Melbourne was hit hard with the liquor licensing laws and the effect that these had. The Tote even had to close it's doors for sometime and many venues, that once staged lived music events, simply pulled them.

Concern was so great that there were a number of sites pop up on facebook and the web, each seeing people rallying to stand up and fight for what was right - Melbourne is Live Music. The number of supporters continues to grow and it appears that before the November election this year of course, the government and the music industry (I still seek clarification on who exactly this was and is) have made an agreement. The agreement for your reading pleasure can be found at www.slamrally.org just follow their link.

You can also see the groundswell of support on facebook www.facebook.com/LongLiveLiveMusic , read comments and know that you will be kept up to date. This page whilst it was established for Melbourne will ensure that those in power do not rest on just this one document and that Live Music not just in Melbourne by Nationally, is well represented by the people that matter and care - anyone that enjoys music:)

I am yet to fully digest the entire agreement but upon a quick glance, I am just not sure if it is robust enough. It is well written 'polly speak' that is for sure.

I will return in a few days to give you my informed opinion.

Facebook allows cliques, profile backups

Facebook today began letting users form cozy cliques as part of a move to give people more control of their information at the world's most popular online social network.

A "Groups" feature that lets Facebook members set up private online havens for clusters of co-workers, family, teammates, or others was unveiled at a press event at the firm's headquarters in the California city of Palo Alto.

"We think that what we have out of the box, version one, blows away everything else," Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg said, referring to "groups" services offered by internet stalwarts such as Yahoo! and Google.

Facebook also began rolling out a feature that will let people download all pictures, video, comments and other digital information they have uploaded to the social networking service.

"Download is really so you can have a copy of all your information," Zuckerberg said. "You own your information. You should have control over it. You should be able to do whatever you want with it."

A new "dashboard" feature to be rolled out in the coming days will let Facebook users see and manage what information in their accounts is accessed by third-party applications.

With the Wednesday, 26 January Sydney BDO tickets snapped up in record time a second Sydney BDO will now be added.

It's only the third time in the Festival's 19 year history that a second show has been staged in any city.

Fans can now attend the second Festival in Sydney, comprising the same bill, on THURSDAY, 27 JANUARY 2011

We a very thankful and proud of the continued popularity and support of the event which enables us to present an additional show in Sydney for the second year in a row.

We also need to thank the artists, managers and agents and of course our team that have 100% supported the staging of a second Sydney event.

Tickets for the 2nd SYDNEY BIG DAY OUT 2011 will go on sale MONDAY, 11 OCTOBER.

at least half i think, if u define 'know' as 'have actually met'.........the rest are generally friends of people i know, or people i know by reputation - and im not afraid to block!!!!!

I have listened to and read many works by so called, 'social media' experts in Australia recently and there is a glaring gap. None of them have been providing information as to what the rules, rights and responsibilities are when using the various platforms, such as facebook, twitter, myspace, reverbnation, youtube and the like.

Yes, there are more using social media for business, marketing purposes.

Yes, more and more believe they are experts (I question this in many cases)

Yes, we live in a different world

Yes, it is important to empower people in the use of social media

Yes, social media is important to business in today's world

AND

No we should not use without knowing exactly what we are signing up for or signing away.

'L' words and 'The Thinking Place'

It is amazing what one can come across, learning through online conversations, that at the time, you think have gone off track when in fact that very conversation takes you into a whole new world of learning.

I began with a facebook post that said Live, Love, Laugh........a dear friend responded with Look, like, levitate. So this turned into a little word game and I guess my competitive and curious nature, took me off into cyberspace to find tricky 'L' words.

What can I say I ended up responding with....labiomancy, lacis, lagotic.......never heard of them before:)

So what began as a statement, became a whole new learning experience and a great new site 'The Thinking Place' Bookmarked for the future......

So I continue the journey in trying to fully understand what I signed up for and what I have signed away in having a facebook account. Important to try and get a grasp of all the rules but I can tell you now, they seem to be never ending. Here are all those listed under point 4 - Registration and Account Security 4.1 - 4.10

This agreement was written in English (US). Please note that Section 16 contains certain changes to the general terms for users outside the United States.

Statement of Rights and Responsibilities

This Statement of Rights and Responsibilities ("Statement") derives from the Facebook Principles, and governs our relationship with users and others who interact with Facebook. By using or accessing Facebook, you agree to this Statement.

4. Registration and Account Security

Facebook users provide their real names and information, and we need your help to keep it that way. Here are some commitments you make to us relating to registering and maintaining the security of your account:

1. You will not provide any false personal information on Facebook, or create an account for anyone other than yourself without permission.

This seems quite simple and practical but how on earth can this be monitored????

2. You will not create more than one personal profile.

Okay, again seems simple but how is this monitored??? Does this mean that you can create more than one profile as long as they are not 'personal' - what is the definition of 'personal'? What are the consequences if you do make more than one profile? mmmmmmmmm

3. If we disable your account, you will not create another one without our permission.

Disable account - why? Under what circumstances is this done? Do you get any warning, any right of appeal? Does disable account mean it is deleted or just can not access? How would they know if another was created? How do you seek permission - is there an official form somewhere around?

4.You will not use your personal profile for your own commercial gain (such as selling your status update to an advertiser).

Laughter erupts. Has facebook looked at how many profiles are now set up for business. Important for all to remember this.....you can have a 'personal profile' and this must not be for business gain.....If you wish to promote products and services then you MUST create a business page or group that you are the administrator of. Folks whilst I am laughing I am also concerned about many of my friends on facebook who have created profiles that are purely for business purposes..............If you are reported, if facebook finds you, they can disable your account immediately and I am serious. I saw this happen to another user 2 years ago and they lost all of their marketing, customer base etc as they did not realise the 'personal profile' could not act as a representation of their business.

I do think that it is near impossible for facebook to keep up with all the profiles created - 'personal' or 'business' but do not take a chance with this.

5. You will not use Facebook if you are under 13.

Well I did not know this............I wonder how they came up with the age of 13? How can this be monitored? I guess as with most I am finding in reading all the rules, many are written to cover facebook's butt, so they have no responsibility.

6. You will not use Facebook if you are a convicted sex offender.

Fair call but again monitoring this near impossible. I would like to think that not only convicted sex offenders were singled out - I do not want those convicted of fraud, con artists and the list goes on allowed on facebook - again keeping in mind monitoring this really is impossible.

7. You will keep your contact information accurate and up-to-date.

Make sense I guess if you want people to contact you in any way other than via facebook itself. Monitoring this again a nightmare and impossible.

8. You will not share your password, (or in the case of developers, your secret key), let anyone else access your account, or do anything else that might jeopardize the security of your account.

This really is for your own well being. If you allow anyone else to use your account and they cause any form of harm be it on your own head - you will deserve any consequences that come.....

9. You will not transfer your account (including any page or application you administer) to anyone without first getting our written permission.

What the..........be careful all. I think I am safe as I have not transfered a page but I do share administration with a few on pages set up. Thinking I will get their written permission to be joint admins just to cover my own backside. I wonder what 'written permission' involves though - can it be via email or facebook message?????

10. If you select a username for your account we reserve the right to remove or reclaim it if we believe appropriate (such as when a trademark owner complains about a username that does not closely relate to a user's actual name).

Huh, I thought the user name had to be your name at least for the so called 'personal profile'. Does this mean that you can pick any user name, make one up and that is okay as long as it does not contravene 'trademarks and the like....mmmmm has me questioning a great deal that I have already read in the rules....confusing to say the least.

Well I hope you enjoyed learning that little bit more about what you signed up for. I for one am off to try and digest and make sense of all of the above.

I have been involved in new tools and technologies for learning for many moons now, well before the days of myspace, ning, facebook and the like. Not a great deal has really stood out for some time but Educational Point of View Technology, has me thinking and re-thinking how to guide learners in todays learning environment and how facilitators can adapt their ways, to ensure their learners are provided with the best, the most current learning possible.

Imagine being enabled via easy to use and tiny camera's, recording and even live streaming, to help your learners.

You can make your own little videos of tasks or steps in a process, no longer reliant on crappy old videos or dvd's that are years old.

You can disseminate the videos you make live, or capture and make available on the net, computers or mobile phones.

You can save your departments budget by purchasing the equipment which is inexpensive compared to that of a DVD set, enable your department to provide the best and most current learning.

You can adapt the material any time you wish and you are in control as the creator.

You can provide just in time learning in the work place.

You can create and provide learning resources that audio visually reinforce learning on mobile hand held technologies, be it phones, iPads and the like.

The possibilities are endless.

If you have not explored this area before now is the time to do so. Do not be a laggard as to do so will only disempower you and disable your learners.

Safety

1. We do our best to keep Facebook safe, but we cannot guarantee it. We need your help to do that, which includes the following commitments:

mmmm 'do our best' compared to what I wonder? At least this is clear, we must be responsible for our own safety!

2: You will not send or otherwise post unauthorized commercial communications (such as spam) on Facebook.

Does everyone know what 'spam' is - it could stand for 'spiced ham'. What is the exact definition of 'unauthorized commercial communications'? Maybe actual examples would help as this to me is unclear. Then again maybe it is meant to be unclear so it can incorporate just about anything????

3. You will not collect users' content or information, or otherwise access Facebook, using automated means (such as harvesting bots, robots, spiders, or scrapers) without our permission.

Now I can not stop laughing, sorry folks but how many users will actually know what 'automated means' are and to many the examples will have them scratching their heads - time for a dictionary perhaps. Really, 'harvesting bots' could refer to removing the bot fly eggs off a horse, 'robots' mechanical/robotic toys or equipment, 'spiders' are creepy crawly critters and 'scrapers' tools to remove bots.

Lesson here - have an online dictionary open whilst reading statement of rights and responsibilities.

4. You will not engage in unlawful multi-level marketing, such as a pyramid scheme, on Facebook.

Okay but how about defining 'multi-level marketing' and 'pyramid scheme'. Many would have no idea and may also be wondering why they would even try to build a pyramid. On the other hand, I wonder if facebook has had a close look at some of the businesses on facebook and the tactics and strategies employed.

5. You will not upload viruses or other malicious code.

A great point and I would hope that most would know what a virus is although it could be more specific and state 'computer virus'. Some may worry about spreading a cold! 'Malicious code' I would suggest needs defining.

6. You will not solicit login information or access an account belonging to someone else.

Another good point but how many would understand 'solicit login'? It is important if not critical however to remember that your accounts are yours and you should at no time allow another person to login to your account.

7. You will not bully, intimidate, or harass any user.

Love it. No body has the right to engage any of the above behaviors on or off line. Again I suggest that definitions here are important as are examples as perceptions and beliefs about what constitute such behavior seems to vary.

8. You will not post content that: is hateful, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.

I am hoping that the majority would understand all of what is written above. I do wonder though how many have read this point as there are posts daily with people sharing youtube and the like, that contravene this rule.

9. You will not develop or operate a third-party application containing alcohol-related or other mature content (including advertisements) without appropriate age-based restrictions.

The above is clear although 'third-party application' maybe unclear to many. I do see some contradiction in this point 3.9 and 3.8 as if not allowed to post 'nudity, porn, violence' then 'mature content' should not be allowed at all, however 3.9 in my mind anyway, says that you can as long as you have the 'appropriate age-based restrictions'. Seems confusing! Maybe a definition of 'mature content' is in order. Click the mouse to your dictionary folks:)

10. You will not offer any contest, giveaway, or sweepstakes ("promotion") on Facebook without our prior written consent. If we consent, you take full responsibility for the promotion, and will follow our Promotions Guidelines and all applicable laws.

Well this is clear. If you get written consent from Facebook, the 'contest, giveaway, or sweepstakes ("promotion")' will get the green light but you will lose all control over it..............mmmmmmmmm. Great I guess if Facebook gets the message out to a vast market but the total control aspect is eating at me................How do you apply to Facebook? What criteria is used by Facebook in deciding if your 'contest, giveaway, or sweepstakes ("promotion")' is worthy?

11. You will not use Facebook to do anything unlawful, misleading, malicious, or discriminatory.

Can not argue to much with this - well I would hope anyway:)

12. You will not do anything that could disable, overburden, or impair the proper working of Facebook, such as a denial of service attack.

What the 'denial of service attack' - how many users would know what this is? Fair call but please explain, even I am scared that I may do something inadvertently to overburden the system - I am on line a great deal......Back off to the online dictionary and google my new best friends.

13. You will not facilitate or encourage any violations of this Statement.

Okay so users are not to do themselves or get anyone else to do anything that breaks any of the rules in.......'Statement', which 'Statement', the one in point 12, 10, 2???? Which one? Oh, maybe they are referring to the entire document 'Statement of Rights and Responsibilities. Got it:)

I am now incredibly tired. Time to sit and try and digest each of the above and continue googling and checking dictionaries to ensure I do not break any of the above rules.

2: You own all of the content and information you post on Facebook, and you can control how it is shared through your privacy and application settings. In addition:

Interesting statement above. I control everything mmmmmm not really, the only way I can see to control my content and information is to share everything with myself and no one else under any circumstances.

1. For content that is covered by intellectual property rights, like photos and videos ("IP content"), you specifically give us the following permission, subject to your privacy and application settings: you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook ("IP License"). This IP License ends when you delete your IP content or your account unless your content has been shared with others, and they have not deleted it.

Okay so I own the content but give it away for nothing and can not control who uses it or where it may show up in the future.......mmmmm A great need to be careful of who you share your content with - can you trust that if you delete your account, they will delete your posts - I do not think so. Maybe I will stop sharing my work through twitter, blogspot and other sites that connect to facebook. Guess I best read all the rules on the other sites too - This is going to take forever.

2. When you delete IP content, it is deleted in a manner similar to emptying the recycle bin on a computer. However, you understand that removed content may persist in backup copies for a reasonable period of time (but will not be available to others).

So what is a reasonable time?

3. When you use an application, your content and information is shared with the application. We require applications to respect your privacy, and your agreement with that application will control how the application can use, store, and transfer that content and information. (To learn more about Platform, read our Privacy Policy and About Platform page.)

Okay I understand that my content and information is shared with applications available on facebook but there is more, the application is supposed to respect privacy and the like but I have to read yet another document for the platforms as well...yikes

4. When you publish content or information using the "everyone" setting, it means that you are allowing everyone, including people off of Facebook, to access and use that information, and to associate it with you (i.e., your name and profile picture).

So, everyone setting means sharing for all to see on and off facebook, guess that means that if even my work, I am giving it away to the world - careful, careful!

5. We always appreciate your feedback or other suggestions about Facebook, but you understand that we may use them without any obligation to compensate you for them (just as you have no obligation to offer them).

Interesting to place that under the main heading. Guess some must have asked for payment for feedback or suggestions. Leaves it open though as statement seems to imply that you maybe compensated - well in my reading anyway

Only a tiny bit of the way through the statement of rights and responsibilities and already I need to find the privacy policy and the platform policy. Still think I need a specialist lawyer or maybe just blindly accept all like so many others - maybe not, that is just not me:)

Question: How do those with learning disabilities, low level education and the like read and comprehend all this jargon? Have facebook and other platforms taken this into account when drawing up their policies and procedures? Serious issues to consider here I believe.

Re thinking social networking platforms

After numerous years of advocating the use of social networking platforms for use in educational settings, I am now wondering if my advocacy was misdirected.

Why?

As the years go by, the terms and conditions of many sites particularly facebook have grown substantially, and at all times the onus is on the user to keep up to date. After looking at the current Statement of rights and responsibilities on facebook, I am wonder how anyone even those in the legal fraternity could take in and comprehend exactly what they have signed up for.

Have social networking platforms grown too quickly? Are users, new users now just blindly accepting terms and conditions they are unaware of? How can this be rectified?

I still believe that social networking platforms have their place in education and in business, however in every case I urge consumers to become familiar with the terms and conditions set before signing their work away.

The “Global Media Intelligence Report” provides insight into many trends, large and small, and raises questions that may prove important for marketers in coming years.

Key insights from the report include:

The global recession sped up the shift of marketing dollars to digital in large developing markets such as China, India and Brazil.
Asia-Pacific will surpass North America as the world’s biggest advertising market soon after 2014.
While the Middle East and Africa account for only 2.9% of total media spending worldwide, the $14 billion in spending estimated this year represents growth of 11.4%, the fastest of any major region in the world.

Four in 10 brand marketers think social creates new challenges to maintaining brand integrity

Social media has changed much about how consumers communicate with one another, and has given them the ability to broadcast opinions about brands, products and services further than traditional word-of-mouth can reach. It has also meant something that can be scary for brands: Marketers are no longer fully in control of the message.

According to a study from branding agency MiresBall andKRC Research, 40% of brand representatives around the world felt social media posed new challenges to the integrity of their brand. More than a third said that social networking sites affected brands significantly enough to bring about changes in marketing strategy.

But with 500 million consumers reachable on Facebook, and a host of other networking sites, services like Twitter and the rest of the social web, the challenges may be worth it. More than half of brand representatives told MiresBall and KRC that social media gave them an opportunity to reach new customers.

Brand marketers were split on whether social media helped create brand loyalty, however. While 35% agreed, another 30% disagreed, with the remainder neutral on the question.

The research also found a disconnect in how marketers thought about their brands and how they tried to reach out to customers on social media. The vast majority of respondents agreed that the brand must define what a company or product is, and that message should be communicated via various PR and marketing channels, including social media, and that the most effective way to communicate about a brand was to stay true to its message. At the same time, marketers were willing to stray from that strategy—especially in the case of social media.

The report suggested that attempts to find superficial social success might be leading brands to create a presence on networks that did not fit with the brand’s personality or use other inappropriate campaigns in the hopes that one would go viral, even if it did not truly convey the brand’s message.

According to the “Back to School Survey” by rich media and video ad serverUnicast, most spend between 3 and 10 hours a week reading mom blogs, and they squeeze the blogs into their busy schedules by checking for posts in the morning before their day officially begins, at night when their kids are asleep and during any other free moment they can grab.

The No. 1 reason moms of all ages begin to read mom blogs is not that they had their first child or wanted to connect with other moms—though those are important first causes—but that they were looking for ways to save money. Similarly, the top characteristic of their favorite mom blogs was being budget-oriented, which came ahead of being informative, humorous, relatable or even fast to read.

Moms’ budget-consciousness extends to their consciousness of advertisements, as well. All over the web, they were most likely to notice ads that included coupons or other ways to save money.

Respondents also cared about ads’ relevance to their busy and often child-focused lives. On mom blogs, readers most wanted to see ads for items like groceries, children’s clothing and, depending on the age of the mom, baby gear.

Ads for products that were more about mom herself, such as women’s clothing and accessories or makeup, were less popular, suggesting that the context is more important than the audience: When moms are reading parenting-focused blogs they too are focused on parenting.

With mobile penetration in the US estimated by eMarketer at nearly 80% this year, and the increasing sophistication of handsets, there is a mature mobile market with a critical mass of users increasingly receptive to marketing and content. As the space becomes more important for marketers’ efforts, they must keep pace with the changing scene.

“As feature phones give way to smartphones and tablet devices, mobility is taking on new dimensions,” said Noah Elkin, eMarketer senior analyst and author of the new report “Seven Key Trends in Mobile Usage.” “The ability to consume, create and share more content than ever before translates into increased engagement on mobile devices. It also means enhanced opportunities for marketers to reach out to potential customers via mobile.”

One of the biggest keys to these new marketing opportunities is the rise of smartphones. The percentage of US consumers thinking about buying a smartphone has doubled since the beginning of 2008, according toChangeWave Research, and Nielsen expects smartphones to be in the hands of half of US mobile users by the end of Q3 2011.

As handsets change, so do mobile consumption and usage patterns. Voice is becoming less relevant, and carriers and their marketing and content partners have transitioned to a focus on data.

Social networks are fast becoming the primary way mobile users exchange information. According to comScore, use of social networking applications increased by 240% between April 2009 and April 2010.

With social network users indexing higher for various forms of mobile content usage, according to Edison Research and Arbitron, the rise in mobile social media also suggests further increases in content consumption—and the need to pay for that content either through user fees or advertising.

Thought I was imaging that posting one per day would take over a year but after an in depth look myself, I think if will take longer.

Thought about posting two a day, no, little snap shots of information have a better chance of being considered and remembered, than a bombarding of to many rules at once.

Wonder if I scare off any facebook users. Wonder if I get any friends telling me to stop posting rubbish. Wonder if I get thank you's from people grateful for being empowered with knowledge to make informed decisions, again being empowered. Wonder what Facebook will think? Wonder if this is really important? Will this in anyway change the way users use their profiles,pages,groups, games, other applications.

No matter what this will have an outcome, any way it goes.

One wonders how facebook could truly be responsible for lowering exam results but this article suggests that it does Facebook 'lowers exam results by 20 per cent'. The study is only small so I am not personally going to take it to seriously.

What this article and study do is provide some ammunition to all those in the educational arena, who are still resisting using technology themselves, or using it for learning.

Nearly 10 years on in my work in the online, educational and business arena and still there is resistance, a lack of belief that technology can be used for learning or should I say, 'is' used in and for learning.

Change occurs slowly they say - pity as the www changes rapidly.

I am still digesting it all but I love the opening line......and I quote 'E-learning has acquired the status of a "radical innovation" in higher education over the past decade'

What the????

E-learning still has such a status??

Now I get it, back in 2002 when I first began seriously looking and working in the 'e-learning' arena in the VET sector in Australia, I was a little ahead of my time as were the other kindred spirits I engaged and collaborated with.

Ah, that is why I was referred to as a 'bleeding edge innovator'

No wonder I got knocked on the head every time I opened my mouth about anything 'e'.

Well at least the debates go on, but I do suggest that e-learning is not a fad, it is in fact a way of learning that has not yet seen it's full potential realised and will not for some time.

E-learning is evolving at a rapid rate and in many ways is embedding itself in learning through the existence of the tools and technologies and those willing to engage with them.

Billions globally are learning online every day through the mere engagement with the technologies.

Learning how to use the tools and technologies in itself learning - example - facebook, you get an account and you create your virtual space by trial and error, selecting applications, communicating, sharing, collaborating, playing games - Learning without knowing you are learning - an interesting concept but TRUE.

Learning Must Be A Current Experience!

I was interested in the article below albeit a little surprised that the educational arena is still struggling to get the message.

The same topics where being discussed here in Australia close to a decade ago, if not more. In 2002 and then 2003, as one of the few and fortunate to be awarded a scholarship, as a Flexible Learning Leader, through the government initiative, of the Australian Flexible Learning Framework, teacher, lecturer, educator resistance to change was challenging to say the least.

Personally I find it tragic that in 2010 the same topics, the same problems still arise in our educational arena.

As educators, from the time of the advent of the internet, any who thought they were 'the sage on the stage', who spoke and through the power of 'osmosis',their 'teaching' would somehow, be captured in the brain of their charges, to be regurgitated by their charges in exams, were sadly mistaken.

The trouble educators have in letting go of the above notion is not just sad, it is intolerable. Change occurs in the world that is a fact. As educators we should be looking at embracing change and ensuring the currency of what we are offering is exactly that, current. Our 'clients' deserve' current learning, not just in content but method, they deserve the experience of learning.

Is it not time, that our so called educators 'got it' and put in the effort to provide what is required? Those who refuse, keep their heads in the sand should be ousted and replaced with those willing to embrace change and evolve with it. Until then, the same debates and writings will continue, with little happening in reality

'Talking Head' via Streamfolio for Mahara thanks to Alexander Hayes of Edupov

Wow, I am hoping that I will be presenting live at the mobilizethis conference in Darwin this year. Two years of presenting online and now time to show that I am 'Real' - scary.

It was suggested to me that doing a 'talking head' piece, on what I plan to talk about, would be a good idea. Um, I thought I knew what it was but all of a sudden 'Freak-out'. Yep, my head on a little video clip using Streamfolio for Mahara through Edupov. The only thing that 'Freaked' me, the thought of capturing myself on video, not the technical side as through this system it is easy, fast and fun, the actual 'Me' bit scared the hell out of me.

So playing around in Streamfolio for Mahara and I must thank Alexander Hayes for the opportunity to do this. By the end of today folks, you will see my 'Talking Head', all I keep thinking is that the only thing to fear is fear itself, so get over yourself Jacinta:)

Games on Facebook - Addictive - A Concern - Yes - Part 1

Games on facebook, no danger or is there????

What began as a bit of fun an outlet, turned into curiosity and what I felt was research. What happened next I was not prepared for and only now feel free to share.

When I first began to puddle around on facebook, some years ago now, I found a couple of games within the applications that were a bit of fun and just a release from other chores. The games I settled on were Vampires and Poker. Neither of them took much time out of my day. I popped into see how my Vampire was doing, she was pretty cute and it was quite satisfying biting other people (all friends who I knew). They gave as good as they got and in the end we had a nice Vampire friendly army. With this game at the time, there was of course the incentive to gather friends as you went, and in those days it was easy to keep track of friends and vet them as required, for safety reasons of course. I chose who I played with and could continue the game regardless. Mindless fun, free of charge (apart from internet connection and time) and I learnt that my competitive streak was still strong - I wanted to get to the next levels, so I bit as many of my friends as often as possible - it was a good laugh:)

My mind became somewhat distracted overtime as adds began to appear on the Vampire game page. I realised and admired I must say the cleverness of those who had developed the game. This was not just a game, it was a business with great marketing. Imagine, developing the game and each time a new Vampire movie came out, you got to advertise it - even click per view and the money would be rolling in. Whilst I admired the developers, I quickly lost interest as it took longer to load the game with adds rolling all around the place. For me at the time the fun had gone but the learning experience was great.

I will not talk about Poker too much needless to say I found more in it than a game, lucky as I am a lousy player. I still think that when I would pop into a table, others would rub their hands and say 'she is back, yay, our cash cow has arrived. No fear, again it was fun, it did not cost money to play, you just popped in and out at will. Again I did find it more interesting than just a game, I made new friends. These friends were people playing, who I would check out (their profiles) and see if there was any strategic connection between us. I made friends with people in the music arena, learning arena and business, people I could vet and qualify as being who they said they were, friends who added value to my being on facebook. I still to this day remain connected to many of these people and I hope it has been a win win situation on a personal and professional level. It is amazing who you will find sitting at a poker table.

My journey with games took a break, interesting yes, but far too many by then offered in the applications, I simply could not decide.

I was then sent not that long ago a request to become a Zoo friend. Yikes, the journey changed and addiction began.

The innovator returns to share her voice

Why do innovators become disillusioned and sometimes cease to have a voice? In my experience because:
1: I did not see in myself what others see in me
2: I did not have the confidence in myself to continue
3: My self esteem was down
4: Being told in some educational arenas that I should 'shut up' as I was talking 'wanky shit'
5: I felt that I was not supported by those who mattered - in fact I was I just had the wrong people labelled as those who mattered
6: I became frustrated with the surrounds of mediocrity
7: I did not have resilience skills
8: I was unable to lead the change required in the environment I was in
9: I was knocked down once to often and began to give up
10: I needed the strength to move on

Not a sad story folks, my reality and it has lead me to bigger and better things personally and I hope professionally. I may have been quiet for sometime and have made the odd effort to gain my voice back, but in all of that time I have learnt so much more, lurking online, puddling around, continuing to learn in secret to some extent.

I am now ready once again to share my learning about social networking, social media, e-learning and the like. All from personal experience.

What I can say is that if you enjoy my experiences, can take something positive away, whatever it is you take then this is my gift. I you do not agree, then challenge my thoughts. experiences. If you just simply think I am full of rubbish then just do not read.

To those who have supported me through the years - thank you. It has taken me a while to truly get back out here and do what I believe I do well, but thanks to the believers I am back:)

Well after having many life issues to deal with and things to do, I am making my way back to my blog. I started this for a reason years ago and it needs to keep going (for me anyway). Watch this space as I have much to update on both social media, learning and music.

Cirque du Soleil - An Uplifting Experience

Cirque du Soleil I was fortunate to receive a ticket to the premiere of Cirque du Soleil in Melbourne. Upon receiving the ticket however I did not realise how fortunate I really was, I knew little about the event and had never experienced Cirque du Soleil in the past.

With no expectations, I arrived at the event, to find tents that on their own inspire one. Those working on the gates, entrances and other areas where friendly and more helpful than I have found staff to be at other events - Congratulations to those who hired the staff and of course to those who were part of the, I guess, customer service team.

So now I am in the correct door and seated. There is something happening in the front rows. The laughter was a clear indicator and when I put my glasses on (yes vain until necessity prevails), I could see, that one of the performers had brought the audience into the show, by engaging them as part of the act. I have not laughed so much for a very long time and despite not being familiar with the language, the performance of the 'clown' type acts, rose above the spoken word. Their actions and performance so detailed and seemingly effortless, providing much laughter and made the audience feel as if they were a part of the event, not just spectators.

From then on, came many acts that were not only amazing in costume and music and skill but uplifting. Many have stated some of the acts to be death defying etc and yes some where and had me sitting on the edge of my seat. From the moment I sat down to enjoy the show, the time vanished as I was immersed in every aspect of each performance. The end came and I like others wanted more. The standing ovations at the end of the event, a clear measure of the audiences enjoyment.

I would recommend that if you are in Melbourne, grab some pals, tickets and treat yourselves to an event that will uplift you like few have done in the past.

Thanks to Julie Cavanagh and the Cirque du Soleil team for affording me such a wonderful, uplifiting and memorable experience.

PS - I enjoyed it so much I purchased the DVD so I can enjoy Cirque du Soleil again and again.

You will find here a few tips to keep you safe, that I try to stick to when using social networking tools and technologies.

1: Allow only the people you know

2: Allow only the people whose details etc can be checked (google them or send them a message asking for further details)

3: Make publicly only those images that show you in a positive light (family, sport, etc).

4: Only allow your friends to see all of your images

5: Be careful of the language you use - no employer would like an employee to cuss all the time

6: Be careful of what you say

7: Block anyone who acts in such a manner that it could have a negative impact on your profile

8: Block instantly anyone who acts in a destructive possibly fraudlent stalkers

9: Never divulge your physical address details

10: Keep your profile clean and simple

I am stunned at what I have read in this article from the age on the 17th of April, Digging up dirt:Facebook Spies for Hire

I am stunned because it has taken so long for the media to report what many of us in cyberspace, using social network tools and technologies, have known for years.

It appears that experts around the world can write, attend conferences as speakers and more are more commonly disregarded until the media in Australia decides to make a report on topics well known to me and many I know globally.

In Australia we have seen just in 2009, major reports of a positive nature, about facebook and twitter. The result of these reports created a mass influx of users from Australia, with many people thinking this was all new and for many had significant benefits to companies, individuals, charities and offered others such as full time mothers opportunities to create small businesses.

Everyone was right about the benefits, advantages and opportunities, however facebook and twitter were not new, they were either unknown to people, or due to the negative reports over at least the 18 months before, many believed they were best left alone. Let's face it over at least a three year period, the media only reported how evil myspace and other tools were, making it impossible for anyone in the Educational arena to convince their management teams of the importance, benefits, advantages and opportunites, in the learning process.

The article I hope brings home to all users that they must be careful and mindful at all times when using any social networking tool or technology. If you have inappropriate material open to the public or have let just anyone be your friend, you are at risk and your current or potential employment in danger.

I hope that those for civil rights will also work on keeping our rights safe as it appears they are being taken away by stealth.

I hope you will all read this article, bring it to the attention of others and keep all safe from those lurking on the net

Trevor Young - Forever Young

Trevor started playing in the mid 1960's with Blacksies Babies and sometimes found himself playing with 2-3 different bands in any one week, things were busy then! After a time playing with Chain he joined Blackfeather, then joining up with Lobby Loyde and forming the Coloured Balls was a great challenge and experience.

The Coloured Balls were the high energy live band of the early seventies and produced some unique recordings.

Trevor has always searched for that elusive combination, where all the elements are right so the music can only be great.

After the Coloured Balls, there were gigs with many bands, Full Boar, Buster Brown, Cold Chisel, Clawed Rains, Intruders, One Night Stand and Fingerprint.

Trevor played with Lobby and the Coloured Balls, for the Long Way to the Top Tour, plus a few special gigs before Lobbys passing.

Trevor is still playing with his own band - Forever Young Band. Trevor has always played for the love of it, and will do so forever:)

Can you live without virtual worlds?

After a forced break from cyberspace due to ill health (yep and even then unable to focus on my beloved computer and numerous sites), I have made the following personal observations - This is the first 20 only - more to come and more detail to come - promise:) 1: No one missed me:( 2: I missed cyberspace more than it missed me 3: Social networking tools/sites and related technologies have gone crazy - so many just since March have emerged - not sure where to start (will get back to you on this:) ) 4: Facebook has more useless applications than ever before and in March it was bad enough 5: More businesses are seemingly using Facebook (those in Australia report to me it is because it is new????? - Where have they been 6: Myspace has taken on many of the same applications as Facebook but there seems to be little response from those in Australia at least in adding them - applying them to sites. Why? Maybe because in the music arena especially most are not of any value 7: Cyberbullying continues as does Workplace bullying or Professional Rape (not in the sexual context - you can have your profession, your livelihood taken away by those who wield their power 8: NSW is taking on google/gmail for learners to use but I have not seen anything about learners being able to use social networking sites (email still seems to be the tool that most are comfortable with - so sad) 9: There appears to be little movement in learners (those in educational settings at least) being allowed to access or even encouraged to explore the various options in cyberspace 10: My learning has suffered to a point however maybe the break has forced me to learn or at least look at all with different eyes 11: Business suffers if you are not able to attend to such (if you have relied on the internet) 12: Friends and colleagues have been busy and appear to be breaking new ground but still remain stuck when it comes to red tape, institutions and government policy (still in the dark ages) 13: Young people appear to be using cyberspace in their own time (out of school etc) to test their entrepreneurial abilities: One 16 year old I know and am using as a case study, goes to school and is doing incredibly well. He then goes home and attends to his business on e-bay (making more around $2,000 a week and takes little time). He himself is now encouraging his friends and even helping them to establish their own business ventures on e-bay. As he stated "no one at school will even talk about the internet, email is even a no no, so it is up to those of us who have the knowledge to help our friends, as school is failing them. 14: The Australian music industry has taken to Facebook, however many are starting to move away or spend less time due to the nonsense they have to deal with (applications sent etc that they have to delete - they do not have the time for this) 15: Myspace for the music industry with a few add ons - Reverbnation and Eventful seem to be popular at present 16: Pulse has just hit the music industry in Australia and everyone appears to be throwing out invites to anyone they know - Arghh 17: Gmail has faults - I lost many emails and no one can explain it to me - BACK UP AND PRINT ANYTHING IMPORTANT 18: Interoperability appears to be on the increase - a good sign 19: Identity Theft appears to be on the increase 20: Twitter is having a fit anytime I try to use it:( Can I live without the internet? Well I did but at a price for what I do - Research and the like, thus personally I could do without, however as a learner, I conclude I could not. Can you live without the internet? That all depends on what you do, why you use it etc etc etc. Oh - last note: I was infuriated seeing elderly people seemingly being used on the TV in Australia as an experiment - watching them and giving them a time frame to see how many friends they could make - NOT ONE MENTION OF THE DANGERS, OF WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN MAKING FRIENDS AND THE PURPOSE OF THE EXERCISE IS STILL PERPLEXING TO ME. I PERSONALLY FOUND IT A DISGRACE (NOT THE OLDER GENERATION WHO TOOK PART - THEY ARE TO BE CREDITED FOR GETTING IN THERE, BUT THE TV PROGRAM SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THE WAY THEY WENT ABOUT THIS AND SHOULD CONSIDER THE DANGER/RISKS THAT THEY MAY HAVE EXPOSED THEIR SUBJECTS TOO - GRRRRRRR IF YOU DO NOT NEED FACEBOOK OR ANY OTHER SOCIAL NETWORKING SITE FOR A VALID REASON, THEN WHY HAVE ONE? STICK TO THE PHONE, MAIL AND EMAIL. Back real soon folks:)

Puss left for an adventure a week ago. He moved from Melbourne where he lived quietly, in an apartment, to Orange NSW. I have missed puss, we all have and today I received this photo of Puss with a new friend Ethan and it took all the bad things from my mind and tossed them out the window. Puss and Ethan are meant to be. The picture says it all. Please stay tuned for updates as we will soon see video and more pics - enjoy the experience with me of watching as Ethan and Puss become closer and they learn from each other. Wake Up All - Innovation and Learning SHUTDOWN WRONG

Al Upton caught my eye some time back when he began to use online environments with such young charges. He has inspired me and many around the world - proving that new worlds bring new experiences and opportunties to learners everywhere and at any age. Now he has been shut down for reasons he can not fathom and neither can I or others that know his work and all the good it has and could bring into the world of learners. Stand up for him now - stand up for learners everywhere - let the world know via your own online worlds, what is going on - the disablement that continues in a world where enablement is so easy if you open your minds and enter new worlds. I have suffered at the hands of the ignorant in the past, I know how it feels to be ridiculed and more and was blessed to have the support of those online who did not live in a world of mediocrity. Whilst I have not spoken with Al, I can only imagine that he is shattered, confused and wondering why the hell this is happening when he has put his heart and soul into his work for the benefit of others. Al you have my support and I will do whatever I can to help. I understand the feelings and hope that with the knowledge that we are all out here and behind you 100% will provide you with a little faith that all is not lost. I respect you, I acknowledge your work and appreciate your sharing and caring. You have taught me much and I stand by you personally and professionally. We will all ride this wave with you, a journey to show just how important and incredible blogging is in the world of learning:) 2008 ...
